What Tire Size Do I Need?

By Aldo Hernandez · Smart Tire, Dyer St · July 11, 2026

Your tire size is a short code printed right on the tire and on a sticker inside your driver's door. It looks like 225/65R17. Once you know how to read it — or you just text it to us — buying the right tires takes the guesswork out of it. Here's how to find yours in two minutes, from the team at Smart Tire in El Paso.

Two places to find your size

1. The tire sidewall

Look at the outer face of any tire. Among the lettering you'll find a code like 225/65R17. This is the size the tire actually is right now — handy, but remember a previous owner could have put on the wrong size.

2. The door-jamb sticker

Open the driver's door and look at the frame where the door latches. There's usually a factory sticker listing the original tire size and the correct air pressure. This is the size your vehicle was built for, and it's the one we recommend matching.

What the code means

225 / 65 R 17
225
Tread width in millimeters
65
Sidewall height as a percent of the width (aspect ratio)
R
Radial construction (nearly all modern tires)
17
Wheel diameter in inches

When you replace a tire, all three numbers should match what's on the door jamb. If you're changing wheels or want a different look, we can tell you what sizes safely fit your vehicle — see our rims & wheels options.

FAQ

Where do I find my tire size?

Two easy places: the raised code on your tire's sidewall, or the sticker inside the driver's door jamb. Both show a code like 225/65R17. If you can't find it, text us your year, make, and model and we'll look it up.

What do the numbers on a tire mean?

In a size like 225/65R17: 225 is the width in millimeters, 65 is the sidewall height as a percent of width, R means radial, and 17 is the wheel diameter in inches. Match all three numbers when you replace a tire.

Can I put a different tire size on my car?

Sometimes, but it affects speedometer accuracy, handling, and clearance. It's safest to stick with the factory size on your door jamb. If you want a different look or fitment, come in and we'll tell you what's safe for your vehicle.

Do all four tires need to be the same size?

In almost all cases, yes — matching sizes keep handling and braking predictable, and many all-wheel-drive vehicles require it. If you're replacing just one or two, we'll match them to what's already on your car.
